I'm proof that you can live the dream

You probably already know me if you've made it to this page. But if not, let me introduce myself -
my name is Richard Pryn (aka Schrieber) and I write trailer music for a living.

I write music in the mornings, once I've dropped my kids off at school, and I use the rest of my time to do fun stuff, follow my interests and create content that will help and inspire other composers.

I have had my music placed in well over 100 trailers and ads in multiple styles and genres (as of 2022). And let me be the first to tell you that I am not traditionally trained in mixing & mastering, or traditionally trained in composition or music production. Most of the skills I use are taken from my years of experience in the industry, combined with years of teaching music students and composers.

(I'd say this is about 70% of my placements to date)

I didn't land these placements right off the bat. It has taken me well over 10 years to get to where I am now and the first few I was having to teach music as my main source of income.

At first I didn't even really know that trailer music was a thing. I thought the film composer wrote it. It wasn't until I was introduced to a company called Pusher who specialised in trailer music that the penny dropped for me.

I was pretty lucky in that my first ever custom job landed a spot on the Men in Black 3 trailer. Which was admittedly a huge moment as Danny Elfman was the reason I wanted to get into composing for a living in the first place!

But after that initial luck, I quickly realised that I was in way over my head.

I didn't know how to structure a trailer cue, I didn't know anything about music production. Well I knew a little, but when it came to creating the huge and powerful sound of trailer music I felt like a little boy holding a shaker trying to emulate John Bonham!

So I worked on my "trailer game" in the evenings when I came home from teaching music.

Let me paint a picture for you of my set up... I was on a 2010 Mac Pro with 16Gb RAM. I had a broken old M-Audio MIDI keyboard and the only decent sample libraries I had for trailer music were the East West Symphonic Orchestra, Spitfire Audio's Original Albion, and Stormdrum. I didn't have all the latest sounds and I certainly did not know how to make my music sound as HUGE as it does today.

Back then, the resources to learn this stuff were pretty limited so all I could do was do what I knew best; research, compare, study, and create.

And I kept on creating as much music as was humanly possible. Desperately wanting to get my music to sound like the "pros".

Slowly but surely the placements started coming in and I continued working hard at my craft and before I knew it, I was winning awards and trailers all over the shop. It was pretty amazing.

And just so you know. I didn't move into an expensive studio with tonnes of gear. I still work from home with the most minimal set up I can get away with and I am still winning trailers. I am not saying all this to boast at all. I am saying this to fill you with hope, that if you work at your craft with dedication and perseverance then you will get there.

And that brings me to the reason that you are here today. I don't want you to take years to start landing placements and getting published like I did. I want to show you exactly how I do what I do, so that you can learn it as quickly and easily as possible. Throughout my career I have always taught music and composition, first to school pupils, then college students, and then composers - in person, online, private tuition. I enjoy sharing what I've learnt and inspiring and helping other composers. I've created the courses that I wish I'd had access to all those years ago.

So enough about me, let's talk about how I can help you and your music to start getting noticed and start making you money. Excited? You should be.

You can learn how to write and produce trailer music in loads of different styles.

I'm going to show you how I write music that get's placed on trailers, promos and ads, so that you can do it too.

I believe that once you learn the fundamentals of composing and producing trailer music then it does not matter what style or genre you choose to focus on.

No I am not just saying that to get you to buy my courses.

I want to remind you that I have not had training in this stuff (OK I went to uni but it was not music production or composition...it was sound & art). I land trailers in all of the styles that I teach courses in; sound design, epic orchestral, hybrid, slow burn, huge drum intros, solo strings, dramatic piano etc) And if you study all these courses you will see that that they all share common ground.

I have had many students say how much more they have learnt from one of my courses, than they did from studying at university for three years.

Think of it like this...

Do you want to invest in yourself and your career with someone who is genuinely open and transparent about their entire working process? Do you want to learn more than one way to write trailer music? Do you want the chance to write in multiple styles and genres without having to work with loads of different clients?

So let me show you how to do it.

My Trailer Music Blueprint

In 2015, a composer friend of mine asked me to show him how I write music for trailers. We had been in bands together for many years so I assumed this would be a breeze.

So I set him a brief and sent him off with a few tips.

When I went to his studio to go over his work he was totally blown away by the ease at which I used Logic and also all the many ways I had learned to create "cinematic" and "trailerized" effects with very little musical material.

It was then I thought that maybe I should create a course in this.

Since then I have created over 30 courses and have helped hundreds of students to:

  • understand how to properly structure trailer music
  • to hugely increase the speed at which they write music
  • improve their workflows
  • improve the quality of the music that they create
  • improve their mindset
  • broaden both their composition and production toolset
  • land publishing deals as a result
  • land trailers as a result

A few words from one of my students:

"Rich is a great teacher"

Nico Rivers

"Rich is a great teacher whose love for the subject shines through in each and every lesson. The courses provide a good look at ideas for structuring and composing effective trailer and ad music in a slew of genres with some great production tips sprinkled throughout. Rich shares some invaluable techniques for organic sound design and arranging for a full orchestra. Watching Rich take a basic chord progression or simple melody and turn it into an epic slow burn or cinematic pop track is illuminating. A couple major takeaways were how to create a structure that develops through the course of a 2-minute track and how to choose the right instrumentation and melodic ideas to stay true to each genre."

What the students are saying...

Paul Gryllis

"I cannot endorse these courses enough"

What makes Rich a great teacher is his passion and enthusiasm for music and people. He loves what he is teaching and it is very evident that he really wants you to succeed.

Rich has saved me from wasting hours of time learning the hard way. Each course he walks you through why he is using the tools that he is using and explains thoroughly why he is making the decisions that he is making.

Rich is always entertaining and keeps me laughing with his quirky sense of humour. One thing that never ceased to amaze me throughout each course was how quickly he created music that sounds brilliant. Honestly, the music that he makes as an example gets placed! That's crazy!

I can truly say I have grown by leaps and bounds in my progression as a producer and my understanding of what the industry is expecting. I cannot endorse these courses enough.

"Richard has made me the composer I am today"

Richard Pryn has made me the composer I am today. By taking his courses, I went from having limited music production know-how to producing music in more than 30 genres (and getting my first trailer placement!). The way Richard teaches is not only enlightening but also accessible. He teaches you how to get better with the tools you already have and discusses his process in detail. Some of my favorite courses include: Hybrid Trailer, Dark Fantasy, Hopeful Acoustic, Cinematic Minimalism, Toolkit Design and Strings & Beats.

Guiseppe Vasapolli

"His methods of teaching are fun, practical and industry oriented

Richard is an incredibly gifted and versatile composer and his methods of teaching are fun, practical and industry oriented. With the use of minimal gears and technology (you basically just need a DAW and a microphone) he teaches how to get that cinematic or trailer sound that is so in demand in the production music world. Not only that, he focuses on form, structure of the song and evolution of music ideas from a film editor point of view, teaching very well what the industry needs in terms of pace and style. Plus he is very fun and kind.

Vess Ray

"Amazing, inspiring and motivating"

[I] completed all the awesome courses under the detailed, well organized and structured guide videos of the amazing, inspiring and motivating teacher Richard Pryn, that gave me a clear footprint for creating music in that style. Enjoyed EVERY single course, but emerging favorites are Slow Burn, Organic & Electronic Sound Design and Swagger. The courses also gave me an enormously greater understanding of trailer music, different styles, structure and build, specially when working on brief. Recommending anyone who’s taking this seriously, to do the courses. It will open your mind, ears and understanding of what is needed to succeed in Trailer music production.

"To be honest, [it's] quite life changing"

At a time in my life where I desperately wanted to find a way of making a career out of writing music for picture, thinking film music was one of the only avenues, I was nudged in the direction of Rich. From the very first lesson, his style of teaching immediately puts you at ease with a good sense of humour and a pace that makes it all really easy to digest. Within just a couple of lessons I had a far more clear idea of what trailer music was, who writes it, how it works in the industry and the journey to get to the point of having music accepted with a publisher. My experience at the Trailer music school was exciting, really inspiring and to be honest quite life changing. Thanks to TMS I am now at a point of seeing my music used on TV all over the world and had a couple of amazing trailer placements. I would recommend the Trailer music school to any musician interested in composing!
